Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is a reading retreat?
We're glad you asked. It's simply a long weekend where you can meet fellow bookworms and read away from the pressures and distractions of everyday life.
Who hosts the retreats?
That would be us. We're Christen Pears and Helen Prudames - friends, avid readers and experienced hosts. Either one or both of us will be on site at all times to make sure you have everything you need during your stay. We might even squeeze in a bit of reading ourselves.
What kind of people take part?
We have hosted people from all walks of life, all ages and from all over the world. Everyone has had one thing in common - a love of books and reading.
How is the retreat structured?
Each of our retreats is slightly different but our aim is to create some time and space for you to read. Depending on the venue, there will be activities on offer such as Pilates classes, sauna sessions or creative activities but nothing is compulsory. You can join in as much or as little as you like but we all get together at meal times.
Do I have to read a specific book?
Absolutely not. Our retreats are relaxed rather than prescriptive. We will provide you with a themed reading list before you arrive if you'd like to get in the mood. There will also be a book in your goodie bag when you arrive. Please think of this as an opportunity to read all of those books that have been piling up on your bedside table.
Do I have to share a room?
No, unless you want to. All of our prices are based on single occupancy. However, if you'd like to come with a friend or partner you can pay a supplement and share a room. Please be aware that depending on the venue, some bathrooms will be shared.
Is food included?
The food is a major part of the retreat. The package includes delicious and nutritious meals prepared by cook extraordinaire, Helen. We also provide snacks, tea and coffee to fuel your reading and a selection of soft drinks. Alcohol is BYO.
Can you cater for allergies and dietary requirements?
Absolutely! All dietary requirements are covered, and we will ask about these when we send you the registration form after you book your place.
I've never done Pilates before. Can I still join a class?
Of course. Christen has been teaching Pilates for almost 20 years and can adapt exercises to take into account everyone's experience as well as any injuries you might have.
